Developmentally-Focused Curriculum
Our middle school curriculum and programs are designed specifically to meet the unique emotional and social needs of young adolescents.
The academic rigor of subjects increases significantly as students' awakening intellects are ready for critical and objective thinking, knowledge of cause and effect, and more refined observation, which they experience in academic main lesson blocks with themes such as chemistry, physics, and algebra.
Their emotional lives blossom through positive and concrete modes of expression, which include the study and writing of poetry, literature, and biographies. They experience a dynamic interplay of knowledge of self and the world as they engage in a wide variety of arts — from painting, sculpting, woodworking and orchestra and chorus to the annual production of a class play. Students take on growing personal responsibility in their classwork while learning time management skills to balance school work with extracurricular activities.
Curriculum by Grade
Sixth Grade
Main Lessons: Advanced grammar: self-editing, expository, descriptive and narrative writing, conditional sentences, report writing; business math, ratios and proportions, freehand geometry; world geography, geology and mineralogy; physics: acoustics, thermodynamics, magnetism, electricity, and astronomy.
Special Subjects: Games and movement, Spanish, woodworking, ensemble/band, orchestra, handwork, drama, art and Cyber Civics.
Seventh Grade
Main Lessons: Renaissance, Reformation, the age of Western expansion and exploitation; chemistry: acids, bases, lime cycle; physics: acoustics, thermodynamics, magnetism, electricity, optics; physiology, geography, astronomy, algebra, geometry, creative writing.
Special Subjects: Games and movement, woodworking, Spanish, ensemble/band, orchestra, art and perspective drawing, and Cyber Civics.
Eighth Grade
Main Lessons: American, French, and Industrial Revolutions; American history: Civil War to present day; geography, meteorology, anatomy, organic chemistry, geometry; physics: acoustics, thermodynamics, magnetism, electricity, optics, loci; algebra, and grammar.
Special Subjects: Games and movement, woodworking, Spanish, ensemble/band, orchestra, and Cyber Civics.
